Memphis officer involved in teen shooting receives threats

MEMPHIS — Memphis police say they are investigating threats against the officer who fatally shot a black teenager during a struggle earlier this month.

The Commercial Appeal reported that the threats against Connor Schilling, who is white, stem from the July 17 shooting of Darrius Stewart, a 19-year-old man who police say attacked Schilling as the officer tried to handcuff him and place him under arrest. Schilling then drew his weapon and shot Stewart.

Police department spokesman Louis Brownlee said the department is investigating the unidentified threats against Schilling.

Stewart's death, which followed other high-profile cases nationwide in which unarmed black men have been killed by white police officers, prompted rallies and vigils across Memphis. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is leading the inquiry into the shooting.
