Advertiser to pay state after suit loss

Arkansas Attorney General Leslie Rutledge said Tuesday she had obtained a judgment against an online advertiser accused of scamming small and medium-size businesses.

The advertiser, New Jersey-based Electronic Media Marketing Group Inc., coerced Arkansas businesses into paying for unauthorized services, Rutledge said in a news release.

The group must now pay a total of $190,000 in civil penalties to the state and $4,500 in attorneys' fees. The company must also cease collection attempts and telemarketing calls in Arkansas.

The suit originally was filed by former Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel in February 2014.
