Felon found guilty of federal firearms charge

A 28-year-old Texarkana man barred from possessing a firearm because he is a felon was found guilty in federal court of violating that law, authorities said.

U.S. Attorney Conner Eldridge said Bobby Joe Hampton was found guilty Tuesday after a two-day trial in Texarkana and will be sentenced at a later date.

Eldridge said police arrested Hampton Feb. 3, 2014, while he was "physically assaulting a female victim." A gun was found in his pocket.

"Hampton later admitted to possessing the firearm which was found to have been manufactured outside the state of Arkansas and had previously traveled in interstate commerce," Eldridge said in a statement.

Hampton faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

Online court records show Hampton's criminal history in Miller County includes convictions in 2013 for forgery and in 2009 on drug charges.
