Roachell takes AWGA lead

Arkansas Razorbacks golfer Summar Roachell bounced back from an up-and-down first round with a bogey-free, 4-under 69 Tuesday, taking an eight-stroke lead into today's final round of the 33rd annual Arkansas Women's Golf Association Stroke at Balboa Golf Course in Hot Springs Village.

Roachell got a birdie on No. 2 to pull even with UALR's Peyton Weaver, who shot an opening round 1-under 72. Weaver birdied No. 3 to take a one stroke lead, but momentum swung in Roachell's favor on No. 5 as Roachell birdied the par five and Weaver shot her first bogey.

Weaver got another bogey on No. 10, then steadied herself with a birdie on No. 11. Roachell got a birdie on No. 12, knocking her second shot within two feet of the hole, to take a two-stroke lead.

Weaver's round fell apart with a bogey sandwiched between two double bogeys from 13 to 15. A tee shot to behind the right trees led to a third shot into a fairway bunker and a seven on 13, and a hooked drive into a creek led to the six on 15.

Lisa Varney of Jacksonville and Heidi Rice of Rogers are tied for third at 159. Varney made a big move with the day's second-best round, a 1-over 74, and Rice moved up from fourth with her 79.

A duel has formed between Brooke Matthews of Rogers and Casey Ott of Conway in the junior ranks. Matthews managed a 3-under 70 despite shooting a pair of double bogeys, taking a one-shot lead over Ott at 4-under 142 behind seven birdies.
