Yankees score 11 in 2nd inning, blow out Rangers

ARLINGTON, Texas -- After giving up five runs in the first inning, the New York Yankees made it up for it real fast.

Brendan Ryan doubled twice with three RBI and Didi Gregorius had a bases-loaded triple in New York's 11-run second inning as the Yankees overcame the Texas Rangers 21-5 on Tuesday night.

Chris Young started the big inning with a double and scored the first of his two runs in the inning when Chase Headley had the first of his two RBI singles in the inning. Young added his fourth career grand slam in the third.

A day after his 40th birthday, Alex Rodriguez had an RBI double off the top of the 14-foot wall in left field to make it 6-5 and chase starter Martin Perez (0-2).

The AL East-leading Yankees won for the eighth time in nine games, and are majors-best 16-5 in July -- matching their most victories in a month since August 2013.

New York scored its most runs since a 22-9 victory against Oakland on Aug. 25, 2011, and surpassed Baltimore's 19-3 victory over Philadelphia on June 16 for the most runs by a big league team in a game this season.

It was the most runs given up by the Rangers since their 21-8 loss to Seattle on May 30, 2012.

Young finished with three hits and five RBI, adding an RBI double in the sixth. Gregorius had a career-high 4 hits, a night after 3 hits and a career-best 4 RBI in the series-opening 6-2 victory.

Brett Gardner scored five runs, including a two-run home run in the ninth off Adam Rosales, the Rangers utility infielder pitching for the second time this season.

ROYALS 2, INDIANS 1 Eric Hosmer's home run with two outs in the ninth inning lifted Kansas City to a victory over host Cleveland, which has lost eight consecutive at home -- its longest home losing streak in 40 years.

ASTROS 10, ANGELS 5 Jose Altuve had a career-high five RBI to lead Houston to a victory over visiting Los Angeles. Houston starter Collin McHugh (12-5) allowed 7 hits and 5 runs with 4 walks in 5 innings for his third consecutive victory.

WHITE SOX 9, RED SOX 4 Jose Abreu and Geovany Soto homered and drove in three runs apiece and Jeff Samardzija pitched eight strong innings for visiting Chicago in a victory over Boston.

RAYS 10, TIGERS 2 Rookie Curt Casali had three hits and homered twice for the second consecutive game, leading host Tampa Bay to a victory over slumping Detroit.

INTERLEAGUE

ORIOLES 7, BRAVES 3 Chris Davis homered twice and drove in five runs, and host Baltimore cruised past Atlanta for its fourth consecutive victory. Davis hit a three-run shot in the first inning and a two-run drive in the second.

PHILLIES 3, BLUE JAYS 2 Visiting Philadelphia won its first game after trading All-Star closer Jonathan Papelbon to Washington, beating Toronto for its ninth victory in 10 games since the All-Star break.

PIRATES 8, TWINS 7 Jung Ho-Kang hit a tiebreaking home run off the facing of the second deck in left center-field in the ninth inning, lifting Pittsburgh over host Minnesota.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

REDS 4, CARDINALS 0 Joey Votto hit a three-run home run in support of Mike Leake and visiting Cincinnati beat St. Louis.

METS 4, PADRES 0 Noah Syndergaard retired his first 18 batters in the rookie's latest overpowering performance, and host New York got two-run home runs from Lucas Duda and Curtis Granderson to beat San Diego.

MARLINS 4, NATIONALS 1 Jose Fernandez stayed unbeaten in his home career, Dee Gordon's standup triple led to him scoring the go-ahead run in his return to the lineup and Miami topped visiting Washington.

ROCKIES 7, CUBS 2 D.J. LeMahieu had three hits and scored twice to help Colorado beat host Chicago.
