Council finalizing Common Core recommendations

LITTLE ROCK — A task force is finalizing its recommendations to Gov. Asa Hutchinson on whether Arkansas should continue using the Common Core education standards.

The Governor's Council on Common Core Review planned to meet at the state Capitol on Thursday morning to work on its recommendations regarding Arkansas' involvement in the standards. Hutchinson formed the panel earlier this year, and it has been holding hearings around the state about the issue.

Lt. Gov. Tim Griffin, who heads the panel, told reporters this week that he'll recommend the state keep some elements of Common Core but change other parts of the standards and rename them to more closely reflect the state's needs.

The task force last month recommended the state withdraw from a standardized test linked to the Common Core standards.
