Rutledge issues consumer alert for first-time renters

LITTLE ROCK — Arkansas Attorney General Leslie Rutledge has issued a consumer alert for college students and others in the state who will be renting an apartment or house for the first time.

Rutledge said young consumers need to be smart while shopping for an apartment or rental house. She said shopping for an apartment or rental house is just as important and complex as buying a car or evaluating the benefits of a new cellphone or game console.

The attorney general said college students and others need to know what to ask a landlord and what to look for in an apartment or rental house.

Among other things, Rutledge said, renters should read the lease fully and ask about utilities, including their average monthly cost and whether the landlord covers those costs.
