TOLEDO, Ohio — The Ohio funeral home where 11 bodies intended for cremation were discovered in a damp room says it provided embalming in accordance with state law.
The Toledo funeral home's statement comes after the Lucas County coroner's office said the bodies of 10 adults and an infant born prematurely were found Friday. It said the bodies were supposed to be cremated but were being stored instead in cremation boxes and body bags. Officials said at least one had been there since January.
The attorney for the funeral home says in a statement that any delay in cremation resulted from physicians failing to timely provide death certificates.
The Ohio Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors plans a special meeting Tuesday regarding its investigation and licensing status of the funeral home and its director.
