Huckabee downplays comments on transgender people

LITTLE ROCK — Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee is downplaying a joke he made about transgender people earlier this year and says he believes voters are more concerned about other issues like the economy.

The former Arkansas governor declined Wednesday to elaborate on the comments he made at a religious broadcasters convention in February. Huckabee joked before the group that he wished he could have claimed to be transgender in high school in order to shower with girls.

The joke from the Nashville speech was first reported by Buzzfeed on Tuesday. The former Fox News host says the only people focused on the comments are the media.

Huckabee returned to his home state for a three-day fundraising swing that also includes stops in Jonesboro, El Dorado and Texarkana.
