A man wanted in the Monday fatal shooting of his girlfriend in Little Rock has been arrested.

Cory Dewan Brooks, 24, was taken into custody shortly before noon Wednesday in Little Rock by the U.S. Marshals Eastern Arkansas Fugitive Task Force.

Online records show Brooks was booked into the Pulaski County jail shortly after 1 p.m. and was being held without bail.

Brooks is charged in the killing of his girlfriend, 26-year-old Yolanda Renee Whitfield, during an argument late Monday night at Brooks' mother's home on West 28th Street near Boyle Park. Brooks was reportedly seen walking away from the scene.

Kevin Sanders, supervisory deputy for the U.S. Marshals in Little Rock, said the task force developed information that Brooks may be traveling near 65th Street and Lancaster Road, so they set up surveillance in the area.

About 11:30 a.m., authorities saw members of Brooks' family "following each other in a caravan" of several vehicles.

"We suspected that he may be with them," Sanders said, adding that the vehicles were followed and pulled over a few miles away at Asher Avenue and Fair Park Boulevard.

The occupants of the vehicles were all removed, and Brooks was identified as one of them. He was then arrested without incident.

The arrest comes a day after the agency's SWAT team surrounded an apartment where Brooks was believed to possibly be holed up. He wasn't there when police later forced their way inside.

McClanahan said officers arrived at the apartment at 1001 Breckenridge Drive about 9:45 p.m. Tuesday and worked to communicate with Brooks, who was thought to be inside.

After a little over two hours, SWAT members forced their way in and found the apartment in question was actually empty. McClanahan said a tip investigators received had suggested Brooks was there or had been recently.

McClanahan said police always try to negotiate to get a suspect to peacefully surrender and can't always tell at first between one who just won't talk back and one who isn't there.

"That happens from time to time," he said. "That's just the luck of the draw."
