Spurlock, Moon win Jenkins championships

Ryan Spurlock of Maumelle made it look easy Wednesday, winning the 33rd annual Bruce Jenkins Memorial Junior Championship by eight strokes over defending champion Whit Parker of Conway and Austin Bowen of North Little Rock.

Spurlock, who was playing in the 17-year-old division, won with a 12-under 204 that included a 3-under 69 in Wednesday’s final round at Rebsamen Golf Course in Little Rock. Other boys age group winners included Bowen (18-year old), Parker (16-year old), Grant Sheiman of Hazen (15-year old), Connor Gaunt of Cabot (14-year old) and Nathan Johnson of Little Rock (12-13 year old).

Elizabeth Moon of Forrest City won her second consecutive girls championship after a 5-over 77 Wednesday. Her 8-over 224 was five strokes better than Josie Roberson of Maumelle, who was runner-up to Moon last year. Allie Weiner of Maumelle, who finished third in 2014, finished in the same position again this year, eight strokes behind Moon.

Alexis Montgomery of Maumelle won the girls’ first flight by a stroke over Alexa Goodlow of Maumelle.

BASKETBALL

ASU-UALR set to meet Jan. 18

Arkansas State and UALR announced that the school’s basketball doubleheader in Jonesboro next year will be played Jan. 18.

The Sun Belt Conference previously released its league schedule but let ASU pick the date for its home game against UALR. The teams didn’t share an open Saturday date, so the game will be played on a Monday. Both men’s and women’s games will be played Jan. 18 but times have not been set.

UALR also moved its home game against Appalachian State from Jan. 16 to Jan. 14. ASU will host Appalachian State on Jan. 16.

Vanover helps USA defeat Puerto Rico

Markus Howard of Chandler, Ariz., scored a game-high 19 points in leading the 2015 USA Men’s under-16 National Team to a 105-54 victory over Puerto Rico on the opening day of play at the FIBA Americas U16 Championship on Wednesday in Bahia Blanca, Argentina.

Connor Vanover, who will be a sophomore at Arkansas Baptist High School this fall, scored 4 points, grabbed 5 rebounds and blocked 1 shot in 9 minutes of action.

Team USA will play the Dominican Republic today.
