The 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. speech will be held at the Grand Hall of the Governor's Mansion, 1800 Center St., Little Rock. The cost to attend is $20 per person, and lunch will be served. Because seating is limited, registration is required by contacting the club via email at politicalanimalsclub@gmail.com or by calling (501) 377-7609. Parking will be available on streets surrounding the Governor's Mansion. Gates will open at 11:15 a.m.

The Political Animals Club is a gathering of people interested in politics who meet on a regular basis and hear from people in the news.

Kurrus, 60, was appointed to his position May 5 by Arkansas Education Commissioner Johnny Key.

The Arkansas Board of Education voted 5-4 on Jan. 28 to assume control of the 24,000-student school district and dismiss the School Board because six of the district's 48 schools are state-labeled as academically distressed. Fewer than 50 percent of the students at those six schools scored at proficient levels on state math and literacy exams over a three-year period.
