The man shot by security personnel as he tried to breach the gate at the Little Rock Air Force Base on Monday had a history of paranoid thoughts and believed Air Force officials had planted bugs in his home, sheriff's office reports obtained by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette show.

On Tuesday, the FBI named Larry McElroy Jr., 43, of northern Pulaski County as the suspect who was shot as he attempted to gain access to the base. The FBI released a written statement saying that McElroy had no “ties to terrorism,”and agents have not yet determined a clear motive.

But reports from the Pulaski County Sheriff's office dating back to 2006 show that McElroy had exhibited paranoid thoughts, "hallucinations" and believed that Air Force officials were spying on him. The latest report was on Jan. 22, when he told deputies he believed the Air Force had bugged his house, reports show. Another report from a year before shows that McElroy claimed he had been held captive by 25 men in uniform who were carrying weapons.

As of Tuesday morning, McElroy was in critical condition at UAMS Medical Center. The FBI has said it believes McElroy acted alone and is aware of his past history. The federal investigation is ongoing.
