Runs, hits reach season highs as Cards top Phillies

CARDINALS 12, PHILLIES 4

PHILADELPHIA -- Randal Grichuk homered and had three hits, and Kolten Wong and Yadier Molina also went deep as the St. Louis Cardinals set season highs for runs and hits in a 12-4 rout of the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night.

The Cardinals avoided their second three-game losing streak of the season while breaking out of the offensive funk that followed Tuesday's news of a federal investigation into whether club officials illegally hacked into the Houston Astros' player database.

The Cardinals batted .211 with five runs in the first three games after the story broke. If the investigation had any bearing on the lackluster offense, they certainly put it out of their minds against the Phillies.

St. Louis pounded out 16 hits, including six for extra bases. Jhonny Peralta doubled and had three RBI, Mark Reynolds had a two-run double and 10 Cardinals got hits.

Ryan Howard hit a home run for Philadelphia, which snapped a nine-game losing streak Thursday. The last-place Phillies sank 23 games under .500.

Tyler Lyons (2-0) won his second consecutive game after going 13 consecutive starts without a victory dating back to 2013. He earned a victory Saturday over the Royals and cruised to his latest one behind double-digit run support.

Lyons allowed 3 runs and 7 hits in 5 innings with 5 strikeouts and 1 walk. He also helped himself with the bat, singling twice with an RBI and scoring three runs.

Phillippe Aumont (0-1) struggled in a spot start for injured Philadelphia ace Cole Hamels, allowing 6 runs and 5 hits in 4 innings.

It was the first career start for Aumont, who entered 1-5 with a 6.13 ERA in 45 big league relief appearances. He switched to a starting role this spring in an attempt to improve his command and had some success in the minors, going 3-4 with a 2.35 ERA in 14 outings (10 starts). But against the Cardinals, Aumont walked seven and threw a wild pitch. Forty-eight of his 104 pitches were balls.

NATIONALS 4, PIRATES 1 Joe Ross struck out 11 in his third major league start, and Washington beat A.J. Burnett and visiting Pittsburgh to end their eight-game winning streak. The 22-year-old Ross (2-1) allowed 1 run, 6 hits and 1 walk in 7 1/3 innings.

REDS 5, MARLINS 0 Mike Leake allowed only two singles through seven innings, and Marlon Byrd homered in his return from a broken wrist, leading host Cincinnati to a victory over Miami. Leake (4-4) has a history of success against the Marlins, going 4-1 in five career starts. He retired the first 13 batters Friday before giving up two walks.

BRAVES 2, METS 1 Matt Wisler allowed only one run in eight innings in his major league debut to outpitch Jacob deGrom, and Jace Peterson hit a two-run double in the eighth to lift Atlanta to a victory over visiting New York. Wisler (1-0) allowed 1 run and 6 hits and no walks in 8 innings.

BREWERS 9, ROCKIES 5 Ryan Braun hit a two-run home run and Taylor Jungmann threw six innings to help Milwaukee snap a six-game losing streak with a victory over host Colorado. Aramis Ramirez added a solo shot as the Brewers rediscovered the long ball after hitting only one home run during their losing streak.

INTERLEAGUE

TWINS 7, CUBS 2 Phil Hughes held Chicago to two hits over eight innings, Trevor Plouffe doubled twice and drove in four runs and host Minnesota breezed to a victory to start their interleague series. Anthony Rizzo homered twice for the Cubs. After his leadoff shot in the fourth, Hughes retired the last 15 batters he faced.

YANKEES 7, TIGERS 2 Alex Rodriguez homered for his 3,000th career hit and smiled all the way around the bases as host New York beat Detroit. Brett Gardner and Didi Gregorius also homered as the Yankees won their third in a row. Detroit has lost four of six.

BLUE JAYS 5, ORIOLES 4 Marco Estrada took a no-hitter into the eighth inning, Edwin Encarnacion had two RBI and Toronto won their ninth consecutive home game, beating visiting Baltimore. Batting for Steve Pearce, pinch-hitter Jimmy Paredes broke up Estrada's no-hit bid with a bloop single to left to begin the eighth, ending a streak of 15 consecutive outs.

RAYS 4, INDIANS 1 Asdrubal Cabrera hit one of three solo home runs for Tampa Bay in his return to Cleveland, leading the Rays to a 4-1 victory over the host Indians. Rookie right-hander Nathan Karns (4-3) allowed one run in 5 1/3 innings for his first victory since May 13.

RED SOX 7, ROYALS 3 Eduardo Rodriguez pitched capably into the seventh inning, Mookie Betts had a career-best four hits and visiting Boston beat Kansas City. Rodriguez (3-1), who gave up 9 runs in 4 2/3 innings in his previous start against Toronto, allowed 1 run and 6 hits in 6 1/3 innings.
