News and notes

• Pitcher D.J. Baxendale, who will pitch for the South Division team at the Southern League All-Star Game on Tuesday in Montgomery, Ala., has a combination of new surroundings and familiar coaches to thank for the selection. Baxendale, who is 3-1 in 10 appearances this season with a 3.51 ERA, gave most of the credit to Manager Doug Mientkiewicz and pitching coach Stu Cliburn.

"One of the best things about having Doug as a manager is he knows every aspect of the game, so he always has something new for us," Baxendale said.

"This is my third year with [Cliburn], so we both understand each other pretty well," Baxendale added. "We can share things that most others can't. He knows how I should look on the mound, which has been a big plus for me."

In the offseason, the Minnesota Twins moved their Class AA affiliate from New Britain, Conn., to Chattanooga, Tenn., and it's a move Baxendale has enjoyed.

"It's a fantastic city. It reminds me a lot of Fayetteville, but it's the size of Little Rock," Baxendale said. "We have great fans that come out every night and lots of events in the community."

Baxendale will be joined at the All-Star Game by former Razorback Zack Cox (AA Marlins), who will play for the North Division team. With Cox and former Razorbacks pitcher Ryne Stanek in the Southern League, Baxendale said he takes every chance he gets to see how they're doing.

"I always love seeing how the former Razorbacks are doing. It's good to see guys you know and see how things are going outside of baseball," Baxendale said.

• Pitcher Chase Huchingson was promoted to Class AAA Las Vegas from Class AA Binghamton, N.Y., by the New York Mets on June 12. Huchingson went 2-2 with a 5.06 ERA in 22 appearances for Binghamton this season, in which he allowed 16 runs on 24 hits with 18 walks and 29 strikeouts in 26 2/3 innings. He's pitched 3 innings in 4 appearances for Las Vegas and has not allowed a run on 2 hits with 1 walk and 5 strikeouts.

• Four players with Arkansas ties who were drafted earlier this month have agreed to contract terms with their new teams. Former UAPB pitcher Byron Davis agreed to terms with the Kansas City Royals on June 16, while former UALR pitcher Sam Thoele agreed to terms with the Colorado Rockies and former Arkansas State first baseman Zach George agreed with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday. Former Arkansas Razorbacks third baseman Bobby Wernes agreed to terms with the Houston Astros on Friday. Thoele was assigned to the Rockies' rookie league team in Grand Junction, Colo., while George was assigned to the Pirates' rookie league team in Bristol, Va. Assignments for Davis and Wernes are not yet known.
