Conway sanitation director position draws 20 applicants

CONWAY — Twenty people have applied for the position of Conway Sanitation Department director, said Jack Bell, Conway’s chief of staff and the department’s interim director.

“We’ve gotten some pretty good applicants; we’re not going to get in a big rush to hire someone,” he said.

The application process is still open, Bell said.

The city’s sanitation director, Cheryl Harrington, died in March after a long battle with cancer. She had been the sanitation director since 2003. She also served as director of the Faulkner County Solid Waste Management District. Bell is chairman of the board for the district, and since he was appointed as interim sanitation department director, he splits his time between the city and the waste management district on U.S. 64 in Conway.

“Lot of good folks out there. People know what they’re doing. The only one who doesn’t know what they’re doing is me,” he said. “I think it’s going to be a good position for someone.”

Applicants for the position to date, said Lisa Mabry-Williams, human resources director for the city, include the following:

• Daniel Alford of Bee Branch, shop manager at the Conway Sanitation Department;

• Robert Barham of Conway, retired law enforcement officer;

• Wesley Blacketer of Conway, self-employed civil-engineering consultant;

• Linda Branscum of Bigelow, customer service representative, B & M Oil Co.;

• Duane Campbell of Conway, operator 3, city of Maumelle;

• Melisa “Lisa” Garner of Conway, development director for Independent Living Services;

• Brandi Gieber of Little Rock, full-time student, 2014-15;

• Kevin Hodges of Lowell, former vice president of Inland Waste Solutions LLC;

• Charles Holloway of Conway, former Acxiom senior team leader;

• Robert Johnson of Warren, district sales executive, Pipe and Tube Supply;

• Kristopher Kendrick of Conway, obsolescence manager/senior sustainment logistics engineer, Lockheed Martin Corp.;

• Rebecca McHughes of Conway, administrative assistant, Conway Sanitation Department;

• Brian Morgan of Greenbrier, facility supervisor/project coordinator, St. Vincent Medical Center in Morrilton;

• Jason Murphy of Plumerville, landfill manager, Conway Sanitation Department;

• Cecil Muse of Heber Springs, no position listed;

• Thomas Negus of Conway, no position listed;

Bell said in an earlier

interview, “It’s a big job. If you start thinking about it, it’s not just running a landfill. … There’s the recycling part of it, the reuse center.”
