Tigers rip Yanks behind three Martinez home runs

NEW YORK -- J.D. Martinez hit three home runs and had six RBI, and the Detroit Tigers busted out for a 12-4 victory Sunday over the New York Yankees to snap a four-game skid.

Victor Martinez hit a home run and drove in four two-out runs off Masahiro Tanaka for Detroit, which was one shy of a season high for runs after being outscored 21-5 by New York in the first two games of the series. Andrew Romine hit Jose De Paula's first major league pitch for a solo shot in the sixth, his first long ball this season.

Anibal Sanchez (6-7) lost his scoreless streak at 21 2/3 innings when Brian McCann hit a home run with one out in the second. But the Tigers' right-hander was steady for seven innings to earn his third consecutive victory. He yielded 7 hits and 3 runs in handing the Yankees only their second loss in 13 home games.

J.D. Martinez connected off Tanaka (4-3) with two outs in the first. He struck out looking in the third and led off the fifth with another home run against the Japanese right-hander, who allowed three long balls for the first time in his big league career.

He then went deep off Danny Burawa with two on in the sixth to give the Tigers an 11-2 lead.

Martinez flied out to right in the eighth with a chance to tie the major league record for most home runs in a game.

Martinez became the first Tigers player to connect three times against the Yankees since Charlie Maxwell in 1959.

RED SOX 13, ROYALS 2 David Ortiz passed two Hall of Famers with his 476th home run, and visiting Boston banged out 13 extra-base hits against Kansas City. Hanley Ramirez hit his team-best 15th home run and Mookie Betts also went deep for the Red Sox, who set a season high for runs. Xander Bogaerts had three doubles, and Wade Miley (7-6) pitched six scoreless innings.

ORIOLES 13, BLUE JAYS 9 J.J. Hardy hit a tiebreaking single in the ninth inning and visiting Baltimore recovered after blowing a seven-run lead to beat Toronto. Jimmy Paredes hit a three-run home run and Chris Davis added a solo shot as the Orioles improved to 13-4 since June 4.

INDIANS 1, RAYS 0 Roberto Perez slid home with the winning run on David Murphy's bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the ninth inning, and host Cleveland defeated Tampa Bay.

WHITE SOX 3, RANGERS 2, (11) Gordon Beckham led off the bottom of the 11th inning with a homer and Melky Cabrera went 5 for 5 and host Chicago beat Texas. The White Sox have won two consecutive after losing a season-high eight consecutive games.

ATHLETICS 3, ANGELS 2 Scott Kazmir pitched into the eighth inning and host Oakland withstood another home run by Albert Pujols to beat Los Angeles. Pujols hit his AL-leading 21st home run of the season, and tied Tim Salmon's team record with 13 home runs in June.

ASTROS 6, MARINERS 2 Colby Rasmus and George Springer each hit home runs to lead visiting Houston over Seattle.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

REDS 5, MARLINS 2 Todd Frazier and Jay Bruce hit two-run home runs as host Cincinnati beat Miami. Frazier hit a two-run home run in the first inning off David Phelps (4-4), his fifth homer in the last five games. Bruce's 11th home run in the sixth inning snapped a 2-2 tie and extended his hitting streak to five games.

NATIONALS 9, PIRATES 2 Bryce Harper and Yunel Escobar hit home runs during a nine-run burst in the first inning, leading host Washington over Pittsburgh. Gio Gonzalez (5-4) pitched seven shutout innings as the Nationals completed a three-game sweep.

PHILLIES 9, CARDINALS 2 Adam Morgan won his major league debut in surprising style, outpitching Michael Wacha and leading host Philadelphia past St. Louis. Winless in the minors this year, Morgan (1-0) allowed 2 run and 6 hits in 5 2/3 innings, striking 6 and walking 2 against the team with the best record in the majors. The 25-year-old lefty had been 0-6 in 13 starts at Class AAA this season.

ROCKIES 10, BREWERS 4 Charlie Blackmon drove in four runs, Troy Tulowitzki had three RBI and host Colorado beat skidding Milwaukee. Nick Hundley had four hits and Nolan Arenado led off Colorado's three-run fourth inning with his 17th home run.

DIAMONDBACKS 7, PADRES 2 A.J. Pollock and Paul Goldschmidt each singled home a pair in a seven-run second inning and host Arizona went on to beat San Diego. Jeremy Hellickson (5-4) pitched six innings for the victory.

BRAVES 1, METS 0 Julio Teheran gave up only one hit in seven scoreless innings, Pedro Ciriaco's pinch-hit single in the seventh scored the only run for the host Braves who completed a three-game sweep.

INTERLEAGUE

CUBS 8, TWINS 0 Jake Arrieta pitched a four-hitter and Dexter Fowler hit a grand slam, leading visiting Chicago over Minnesota. After walking a career-high six in his last start, Arrieta (6-6) didn't walk anyone and struck out seven for his second career shutout.
