ESPN says it obtained a notebook that shows Pete Rose bet on Cincinnati Reds games during his last season as an active player in 1986.

The career hits leader agreed to a lifetime ban from baseball in 1989 after an investigation by John Dowd, a lawyer retained by Major League Baseball, concluded he bet on the Reds to win from 1985-87 while he was a player and manager.

Rose repeatedly denied the allegations before admitting in a 2004 autobiography he bet on Cincinnati to win while he managed the team. Rose became player-manager in 1984 and managed the team until the suspension in August 1989.

ESPN’s Outside the Lines said it obtained a notebook seized by U.S. Postal Inspection Service in October 1989 from Rose associate Michael Bertolini, which reflect betting records from March to July 1986. The documents are under seal and stored in the National Archives’ New York office, ESPN said.

Rose applied for reinstatement to baseball in September 1997 and met in November 2002 with Commissioner Bud Selig, who never ruled on the application. Rose applied again after Selig was succeeded by Rob Manfred in January.

Rose is ineligible for the Hall of Fame as long as he is on the permanently suspended list.

Brady hearing today

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady will have his appeal today as he attempts to have his four-game suspension reduced or thrown out for underinflating footballs in the AFC Championships Game. The NFL said Commissioner Roger Goodell authorized the discipline that was imposed by league executive Troy Vincent, who signed the letters sent to Brady and the New England Patriots informing them of the penalties. The NFL Players Association challenged Vincent’s power to issue punishment, citing Article 46 of the league’s collective bargaining agreement. Goodell dismissed the union’s claim when he declined to recuse himself from hearing the appeal June 23. Brady was suspended four games, and the Patriots were fined $1 million and docked two draft picks after investigator Ted Wells found that the Super Bowl champions illegally used under-inflated footballs in the AFC title game. Goodell said he will give Brady an opportunity to introduce new evidence next week. If Brady’s suspension isn’t overturned, the battle could end up going to court.

The Cleveland Browns have acquired quarterback Terrelle Pryor off waivers from Cincinnati and will give him a chance to make their roster as a wide receiver. The former Ohio State star was recently released by the Bengals. The 6-4, 233-pounder has appeared in 15 NFL games and made 10 career starts at quarterback. Pryor went 31-4 in three years as a starter at Ohio State, where he completed 170 of 302 passes for 1,953 yards with 9 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He also had 627 yards rushing. Pryor spent training camp in 2014 with Seattle and spent parts of the 2015 offseason with Kansas City and Cincinnati. The Browns waived defensive back Landon Feichter to make room on the roster.

A weekend wreck claimed the life of a Troy University football player and injured three others. The school’s athletic department said offensive lineman Corey McCullers, a 19-year-old redshirt freshman from Holtville, Ala., died Saturday afternoon in a wreck in Troy, Ala. State troopers said Mc-Cullers was driving a car that collided with another automobile on U.S. 231 before striking a parked travel trailer. Three people in the other car were injured.

A University of Missouri player remains hospitalized in serious condition after being injured in a car accident. Harold Brantley, a defensive lineman, was injured in a crash in Columbia, Mo., on Sunday afternoon. The University of Missouri Hospital said Brantley was in serious condition Monday but could not provide details of his injuries. Madeleine Stock, a Missouri women’s basketball player who was in the car, was treated and released for minor injuries. The Missouri State Highway Patrol said Brantley overcorrected after driving off the left side of U.S. 63. The car then slid off the right side of the road, struck a guardrail and overturned. The patrol said Brantley and Stock weren’t wearing seatbelts.

Hawks GM steps down

The Atlanta Hawks have announced that Danny Ferry has stepped down as general manager of the team, ending an indefinite leave of absence that began in August following racially derogatory comments Ferry made. Hawks CEO Steve Koonin said in a statement Monday announcing the move that Ferry is a “tremendous” general manager and that he “is not a racist.” Koonin added now that the Hawks have identified new owners, “the resolution of Danny’s contract with existing ownership is appropriate.” Ferry, 48, hadn’t commented publicly since going on indefinite leave but said in the Hawks’ release that while the year has been “incredibly difficult and humbling, it is critical for me to clear my name and for people to realize that I have always built a culture of respect, diversity, and honesty.”

Sources familiar with the situation said the Charlotte Hornets have won the bid to host the NBA All-Star game in 2017. The sources spoke to The Associated Press on Monday on the condition of anonymity because an announcement has not been made. The Hornets have scheduled a news conference for today that will include NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and team owner Michael Jordan. The Charlotte Observer first reported the news. The city agreed to spend more than $30 million to upgrade their arena when the Hornets submitted the bid to host the game last summer. Charlotte last hosted the All-Star game in 1991 at the Charlotte Coliseum.

Former Grand Slam finalists Svetlana Kuznetsova and Dominika Cibulkova advanced to the second round of the Eastbourne grass court tournament Monday in Eastbourne, England, while top-seeded Petra Kvitova withdrew because of illness a week before starting her title defense at Wimbledon. Kuznetsova, who has won the French Open and U.S. Open, converted all four of her break points in beating Magdalena Rybarikova 7-6 (5), 6-4 to set up a match against Flavia Pennetta. Cibulkova, a runner-up at the Australian Open last year, beat Harriet Dart 6-1, 6-3 and will next play 2014 Wimbledon semifinalist Lucie Safarova. Kvitova pulled out before she had played a match at Eastbourne in a disruption to her preparations for Wimbledon.
