Perryville post office would be renamed for slain POW

PERRYVILLE — Legislation introduced in Congress would rename the U.S. Post Office in Perryville in honor of an Arkansas native who was executed in Vietnam.

The legislation presented by U.S. Sen. John Boozman and Rep. French Hill and announced Thursday would name the post office in honor of Sgt. Harold George Bennett.

Bennett was a prisoner of war when he was executed in June 1965. He had been taken prisoner during a firefight with the Viet Cong in December 1964.

He served as a Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, adviser in South Vietnam.
