SAU to plant tree in honor of new president

MAGNOLIA -- Southern Arkansas University officials will hold a ceremonial tree planting in honor of incoming President Trey Berry on Wednesday.

The public can attend a short program that is to begin at 10 a.m. on the east lawn of Overstreet Hall at SAU. The event includes the ceremonial "replanting" of the university's historic Lone Pine Tree.

"The Lone Pine Tree was an iconic tree on our campus from 1909-1956 when it was toppled by a storm. We hope that our replanting will be a symbolic honoring of our past and a pledge to the future," Berry said.

Berry joined SAU in 2011 as professor of history and dean of the College of Liberal and Performing Arts.

Before coming to SAU, he spent two years as deputy director of the Department of Arkansas Heritage, two years as a dean at the University of Arkansas at Monticello, and 18 years as a faculty member and administrator at Ouachita Baptist University.
