Most of Arkansas is under a slight risk for severe weather as a cold front moves into the state Friday afternoon and night, bringing relief from the sweltering weather of recent days but also chances for strong storms.

The National Weather Service said in a statement that damaging winds and large hail are considered the greatest threats with storms that could develop ahead of the front's arrival. Heavy rain could also spur localized flash floods, the statement added.

The front is expected to reach northern parts of the state in the afternoon and then move south through the night.

Temperatures on Friday will be lower than conditions that earlier in the week prompted heat advisories for parts of Arkansas.

No such advisories are set Friday, though temperatures were expected to reach the low to mid-90s in central and southern parts of the state. Highs in the 80s were forecast in northern Arkansas. In Little Rock, a high of 93 is forecast, but it could feel as hot as 99 when the humidity is factored in.

Cooler air is expected for the weekend after the front moves through. Highs across the state are forecast to reach the low to mid-80s on Saturday and the mid- to high 80s on Sunday.
