UAMS plans clinic to evaluate driving

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock is opening a driving assessment clinic July 6.

The clinic will be on the first floor of the UAMS Family Medical Center at 521 Jack Stephens Drive. It will be open on Mondays with 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. appointment times, and 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. driving test times, UAMS announced last week. Those interested in scheduling appointments can call (501) 686-6565.

The full assessment will cost $600 in total and will not be covered by insurance, according to a news release.

The assessment includes a comprehensive physical exam, including a review of medical history. If the patient passes the physical exam, the patient will then undergo a driving test on the same day.

The patient will then receive a pass or fail grade. If the patient needs additional evaluation, he will be referred to a specialist.

The assessments will initially be for the state's aging population, but the academic medical hospital is hoping to expand it to include patients who have suffered from strokes, spinal cord injuries or congenital health problems.

Harding University aide gets new post

Harding University has named a vice president for alumni and parent relations, a new position.

Liz Howell was an assistant to the school's president for alumni and parent relations at the private university in Searcy, according to a news release. She will begin in the new job Wednesday and will become part of President Bruce McLarty's 11-member Cabinet, the release states.

"I am happy that Liz Howell will be joining the cabinet as vice president for alumni and parent relations," McLarty said in a statement. "She will continue directing the alumni office she has so ably led for 16 years, and she will bring a new emphasis on the voice of Harding alumni to cabinet discussions."

In the new position, Howell will continue alumni activities, including organizing homecoming, planning special campus events, organizing and conducting off-campus events, and directing efforts to maintain the university's 50,000-member alumni database.

ASU offers degree in social media

This fall, Arkansas State University will offer a degree in social media management.

The Jonesboro-based university is the only one in the region offering the bachelor's degree, according to a news release.

The new degree offering will allow students to learn more about a "fast growing, dynamic social media industry from a public relations perspective," the news release states. Students will learn social media strategies, monitoring and brand-building, the university said.

"We are seeing more demand for students who have expertise in social media from corporations, nonprofits and agencies," Brad Rawlins, dean of the College of Media and Communication, said in a statement. "They are particularly interested in students who can develop and deploy social media strategies, measure effectiveness of social media messages, and construct multimedia content for social media sites."
