12-year-old boy dies after Nashville fireworks accident

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A 12-year-old boy in Nashville has died after an accident involving fireworks.

Multiple media outlets report that the boy was playing with mortar-style fireworks on Sunday night, when one of the shells exploded in his hand, hitting him in the chest.

Police said Antonio Braden was taken to a hospital, where he died of his injuries.

Police said the incident happened as a 24-year-old man noticed two juveniles grab two unexploded shells and asked Antonio to retrieve one of them. Police said someone threw the shell, causing it to break.

The man told police he then saw Antonio holding a tube toward the sky while another juvenile lit the damaged firework. The man said the shell made a strange noise, and Antonio ran about 30 feet and collapsed.
