White County Iris Society Meeting

SEARCY — The White County Iris Society will meet at 2 p.m. at the home of Paul and Joli Love, 605 E. Race. NCA District Fair Scholarship Deadline

STURKIE — Today is the deadline to apply for the Billy Ray Nix Memorial Scholarship and the North Central Arkansas District Fair Scholarship for graduating seniors in the seven-county district fair area. Students in Cleburne, Fulton, Independence, Izard, Sharp, Stone and Van Buren counties who have participated in county, district or state fairs and meet the scholarship criteria are eligible to apply. Arsenic and Old Lace

The Rhodes Show Concert

NEWPORT — The Arkansas State University-Newport Concert/Lecture Series will wrap up its 2014-15 season Tuesday when The Rhodes Show visits the ASUN Center for the Arts. Literacy Project Tutor Training Workshops

BATESVILLE — The Literacy Project, which serves Fulton, Sharp, Izard and Independence counties, teaches adults who are learning to read and adults who are learning English. Gem and Mineral Club Meeting

ASH FLAT — The Spring River Gem and Mineral Club will meet at 10 a.m. at the Museum of Imagination instead of at the Omaha Center. Arkansas State University professor Edward Salo will five a talk, Preserving What Is Important, which will examine the National Historic Preservation Act and the National Register of Historic Places and how they have been used since the 1960s to preserve the nation’s history, including archaeological sites. To get to the museum from the south side of Ash Flat, turn west on Arkansas 56 and go 20 miles to Brockwell. Turn left onto Arkansas 9, and go 1 mile. The museum is a green metal building. Spring Flowers Painting Class

Cabot High Cruzers Car Show

CABOT — The Cabot High Cruzers Car Show will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Cabot High School’s Champs Hall parking lot. Trophies, music, food and more will be available. Kids’ Newspaper Art Workshop

BATESVILLE — The Batesville Area Arts Council will offer a Kids’ Newspaper Art Workshop on Saturday at the BAAC Gallery on Main, 226 E. Main St. Participants will create a unique piece of artwork using recycled newspaper with help from instructor Leia Parks. Chili Supper and Dessert Auction

EL PASO — The El Paso 4-H Club will have its annual Chili Supper and Dessert Auction from 6-8 p.m. at the El Paso Community Center. Chili will be served by members of the club. There is no charge, but donations will be accepted at the door. The supper will be followed by a dessert auction, with pies, cakes and cookies sold to the highest bidders. Proceeds from the event will benefit 4-H Club projects and the rehabilitation of the El Paso Bank Building. Built in 1894 and placed on the National Historic Registry in 1990, the building is being renovated by the community to serve as a community library. Ladies Luncheon and Fashion Show

MOUNTAIN VIEW — The Ozarka College Foundation will host its third annual Ladies’ Luncheon and Fashion Show at 11 a.m. in the Ozark Heritage Bank Student Commons Area at Ozarka College-Mountain View. The Ozark Folk Center Skillet Restaurant will provide a catered lunch. The event will also feature a silent auction, including cheesecakes prepared by the Ozarka College Culinary Arts Department. Dutch Oven Baking Bonanza

POCAHONTAS — A Dutch Oven Baking Bonanza will be held from 2-4 p.m. at Davidsonville Historic State Park. Participants will join a park interpreter to make a variety of sweet treats, all in Dutch ovens. Sternwheelers, Snipers and Shovels

NEWPORT — Jacksonport State Park will present Sternwheelers, Snipers and Shovels at 9:30 a.m. in the courthouse. The event will feature unique aspects of Jackson County history, each driven by the power of steam engines. At 9:30, Jackson County historian Robert Craig will speak on steam-powered progress; then Civil War historian George Lankford will discuss the steam engines that helped fight the Civil War on the White and Black rivers. Searcy Youth Art

SEARCY — A new exhibit, Searcy Youth Art, will be at the Searcy Art Gallery at the historical Black House through March 25. The show features the artwork of more than 40 student artists ranging from kindergartners to eighth-graders from Sidney Deener Elementary School, Westside Elementary, McRae Elementary, Southwest Middle School, Kensett Elementary, Judsonia Elementary and Harding Academy. The display includes pieces in a variety of media, including pastel, crayon, paint, pencil, marker and wax resist, as well as sculptures and mosaics. Gallery hours are 1-4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and noon to 4 pm. Saturday. Admission is free.

Lenten Lunches

HORSESHOE BEND — Faith Presbyterian Church on Church Street will provide soup and sandwiches at noon each Wednesday during Lent. All are welcome, and a new speaker each week will provide a brief message during the meal. The lunch consists of three kinds of homemade soup and various sandwiches. There is no charge for the meal, but donations are appreciated.

Rotary Club Pork Butts Sale

HEBER SPRINGS — The Rotary Club of Heber Springs is taking orders for smoked pork butts. The cost is $40, with the meat weighing an average of 7 to 8 pounds. Boyd Carpenter Scholarship Applications

ASH FLAT — For the 31st year, FNBC Bank will award the Boyd Carpenter Scholarship to a graduating high school senior from Sharp, Izard or Fulton County who plans to seek a four-year degree. FNBC Bank partners with the Arkansas Community Foundation to fund this $4,000 scholarship — $1,000 per year for four years. Southwestern Regional Rendezvous

LESLIE — The 31st annual Southwestern Regional Rendezvous will be held March 13-21. The rendezvous is a pre-1840s American fur-trade-era rendezvous re-enactment. There may be up to 300 camps at the rendezvous, located on the mountain above Leslie. The event will include rifle/pistol and smooth-bore shooting, tomahawk and knife throwing, archery, a cooking contest, fire starting, kids’ activities and more. Boating Education Class

NEWPORT — Arkansas State University-Newport will host an Arkansas Game and Fish Commission Boating Education course from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 14 in Room 127 of Walton Hall. Fish Fry

AUSTIN — A fish fry will be held from 4-7 p.m. March 14 at the 16th Section Community Center. The meal will include fried fish, shrimp, chicken, fries, coleslaw, baked beans, okra, onion rings, hush puppies, beverages and desserts. Basic Orienteering Class

Veterans Day of Recognition

SEARCY — A special fundraiser to help local veterans will be held at 9 a.m. March 14 at the Searcy Events Center. The mayor will sign a proclamation declaring March 14 as Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans Day of Recognition. This family event will offer live music, vendors and food. The public is welcome. ASUN Spring Flex Online Courses

NEWPORT — Registration remains open for Spring Flex online courses at Arkansas State University-Newport, and classes will begin March 16. Designed for students who may have missed spring enrollment or dropped a course, or those who want an accelerated pathway to graduation, the Spring Flex courses, which run through May 12, are similar in structure and time commitment to ASUN’s summer courses. ASUN’s online course offerings include Freshman English 2, Biological Science, History of Arkansas, General Chemistry, Concepts of Fitness, Introduction to Philosophy, College Algebra and Introduction to Geography. National Virtual Aviation Safety Stand Down

NEWPORT — Arkansas State University-Newport will offer an Active Shooter/Rapid Response Training Level 1 seminar, presented by the Criminal Justice Institute of the University of Arkansas, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. March 24 and 25 at ASUN. The March 24 class will be held in Room 134 of Walton Hall, and the March 25 session will be in the High Voltage Laboratory. There is no charge for the class, but preregistration is required. Chamber Trap Tournament

BATESVILLE — The Batesville Area Chamber of Commerce will host its fourth annual Chamber Trap Tournament from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 27 at the Independence County Shooting Sports Complex. Registration will begin at 9 a.m., and the first pull will be at 10 a.m. Each team of five will shoot 25 targets per round. At the end of the first round, event officials will tally the scores and divide teams into evenly matched flights. Prizes will be awarded to winning teams in each flight. Amateur shooters are encouraged to participate, and practice will be held March 26. Sponsorship opportunities are available, and corporate teams are encouraged to participate.
