Another snowstorm is expected this week, and it could drop 4 inches of snow or more on parts of central Arkansas, the National Weather Service said.

Winter storm watches were already set to go into effect Wednesday for most of the state. The watches noted that "accumulating snow will likely cause travel issues on area roadways."

Christopher Buonanno, a meteorologist with the agency's North Little Rock office, said precipitation will begin behind a strong cold front that will send temperatures across the state plummeting. Temperatures on Tuesday will range from the 50s to 60s and then fall below freezing as the front arrives Wednesday.

In the north, the wintry weather is expected to start as sleet and then turn to snow between 6 a.m. and noon. The precipitation is expected to shift to wintry weather in central Arkansas in the afternoon. The southern part of the state would see it later in the afternoon or early evening.

Buonanno said the highest amounts of snowfall, 4 inches or more, are expected in central and east-central Arkansas. But he cautioned that the specifics of the forecast could still change.

"Please keep in mind that this information is based on the latest model data," Buonanno said in an email. "Being that the expected event is still a couple of days out, the forecast is likely to change to a certain degree."

The precipitation will likely "taper off" Wednesday night into Thursday morning, though temperatures will remain low. High temperatures Thursday are expected to largely not exceed the 30s.
