Gassville woman killed after SUV runs off icy road

A Gassville woman was killed Saturday after the sport utility vehicle she was riding in ran off an icy highway in Marion County, authorities said.

It happened shortly after 4 p.m. as 21-year-old Krystal F. Gorbet of Midway was driving a 2001 Dodge Durango west on U.S. 62, Arkansas State Police said.

According to a preliminary report, the Durango lost traction on the icy road and veered into a ditch on the east side of the highway. The right side of the SUV then hit a tree, police said.

Gorbet and a minor whose age wasn't known were taken to North Arkansas Regional Medical Center in Harrison with unspecified injuries.

A passenger identified in the report as 20-year-old Tiffany L. Foley of Gassville suffered fatal injuries.

Police said it was raining at the time and the highway had turned icy. The report didn't note the exact location of the single-vehicle accident.

The death was one of two in traffic crashes on icy state roads Saturday. There have been 74 fatalities in traffic crashes in Arkansas so far this year, according to preliminary figures.
