A suspected burglar was shot in the hand Tuesday after a struggle with a neighbor who spotted him trying to break into a home, authorities said.

The suspected burglar, whose name was not released, suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police on the scene said. He was taken to a hospital for treatment, while a second suspect with him who was not injured was taken into custody, Little Rock Police Department Sgt. Michael Ford said.

It happened about 12:45 p.m. at a home in the 6700 block of East Wakefield Drive, which is south of 65th Street and west of Scott Hamilton Drive.

Ford said the neighbor spotted the apparent break-in and was armed when he went to confront the burglar inside the home. A struggle ensued, during which the gun went off and the suspected burglar was shot, Ford said.

Police roped off with crime scene tape the home where the confrontation occurred as well as the yard of a second home across the street. Ford said officials were awaiting a warrant to search the house across the street because they believe stolen property from the first house ended up there.

Authorities initially described the shooter as the homeowner.
