Central Arkansas men fall to Sam Houston

SAM HOUSTON STATE 76, CENTRAL ARKANSAS 49

HUNTSVILLE, Texas -- Kaheem Ransom and Paul Baxter had 12 points apiece to lead Sam Houston State (23-6, 14-2 Southland Conference) to a victory over Central Arkansas (2-25, 2-14) on Monday night.

Michael Holyfield and Dakarai Henderson scored 11 each and DeMarcus Gatlin added 10 for the Bearkats.

UCA was without junior guard Mike Martin, who did not make the trip. Martin is the Bears' second-leading scorer with 11.5 points per game.

Sam Houston State's defense thwarted UCA in the second half as the Bearkats started the final period with a 23-0 run to go up 56-26 at the 14:34 mark. The Bears did not score until Mathieu Kamba made a free throw with 11:26 left in the game.

SHSU bounced back from its second conference loss, falling to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 61-59 on Saturday. The Bearkats trail Stephen F. Austin in the conference standings. Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston State will play Saturday. The Lumberjacks won the first game 79-68.

Jordan Howard led the Bears with 11 points and Albert Christensson added 10. UCA finishes the regular season at Nicholls State on Thursday and at McNeese State on Sunday.

SWAC WOMEN

JACKSON STATE 78, UAPB 74

Alisa Ross scored 25 points to lead Jackson State (11-16, 8-8 Southwestern Athletic Conference) to a victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff (6-22, 4-13) at the H.O. Clemmons Arena in Pine Bluff.

Destiny Brewton led the Lady Lions with 19 points off the bench. Ajia Richardson scored 14 points while Diamond Richardson added 11 points and 10 rebounds.

UAPB led 35-34 at halftime, but Jackson State outscored the Lady Lions 44-39 in the second half to improve to .500 in the SWAC.
