Sam's Club finishes Springdale land buy

Sam's Club has completed the $12.4 million purchase of about 70 acres in Springdale that will be the location of a new store.

Sam's Club, the warehouse retail division of Wal-Mart, purchased the land from Shaw Holdings Limited Partnership, according to documents filed with Washington County on Monday. About 67.5 acres were purchased for $11.7 million, and Sam's Club spent $700,000 for another 3.19 acres.

Sam's Club announced plans for a new, 136,000-square-foot store at the location Aug. 1. While the company has not disclosed when construction will begin, it said last year that the store would be open in spring of 2016.

Shaw Holdings is registered to Bobby Shaw, son of Willis Shaw Express Inc. founder, Willis Shaw. Willis Shaw died April 20 at the age of 95.

Index down 1.60 as ArcBest, Acxiom fall

The Arkansas Index, a price-weighted index that tracks the largest public companies based in the state, fell 1.60 to 398.13 Tuesday.

"The major averages closed lower as cautious investors moved to the sidelines ahead of today's release of the Fed's Beige Book report on economic conditions," said Bob Williams, senior vice president and managing director of Simmons First Investment Group Inc. in Little Rock.

ArcBest skidded over 7 percent lower after the company warned analysts that revenue growth is off to a slow start this year, Williams said.

Acxiom fell just over 2 percent on average volume, he said.

On the upside, Murphy Oil climbed 1.7 percent in light trading, Williams said.

Dillard's hit a 52-week high during the day, Williams said.

The index was developed by Bloomberg News and the Democrat-Gazette with a base value of 100 as of Dec. 30, 1997.
