Bluesman Davis to release CD at White Water Tavern

The Whole Famn Damily will perform at 9:30 p.m. today at the White Water Tavern. Admission is $5.

CeDell Davis will mark the release of a new CD, Last Man Standing, with a show at 9 p.m. Friday.

Davis will be accompanied by guitarist Jimbo Mathus (Squirrel Nut Zippers), drummer Barrett Martin (Screaming Trees, Mad Season, Walking Papers) and bassist Stu Cole (Squirrel Nut Zippers), along with guitarists Zakk and Greg Binns of Hot Springs blues band Brethren.

Admission is $10.

Born in 1926 in Helena, Davis has survived yellow fever, polio, being trampled in a stampede at a blues club and a stroke, which left him unable to play guitar, which he had previously done, using a butter knife as a slide. He now concentrates on singing.

In 1981, the book Deep Blues by the late Little Rock native Robert Palmer, helped publicize Davis' long career as a Delta bluesman.

Davis' latest CD combines new and old releases: Last Man Standing is the new 16-song disc and the second disc is a re-release of When Lightnin' Struck the Pine, originally released in 2002.

The Frontier Circus will host a record release party at 9:30 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $7.

Following the Circus show, Marvin Berry -- a new local rock 'n'roll band featuring Andy Warr, Will Boyd, Chris Michaels and Dave Hoffpauir -- will close out the evening.
