Alma mater concert

Singer-songwriter Bonnie Montgomery will return to her alma mater, Ouachita Baptist University, for a concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Verser Theatre, Jones Fine Arts Center, 410 Ouachita Ave., Arkadelphia.

'Legendary' tunes

The North Little Rock Community Concert band will open its 2015 concert season at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Patrick Henry Hays Senior Center, 401 W. Pershing Blvd., North Little Rock. Rico Belotti will be on the podium for a program titled "Legends of Stage and Screen," including John Philip Sousa's The Liberty Bell march; arrangements of selections from Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera and marches from John Williams' scores for Star Wars and 1941; a Gilbert & Sullivan Symphonic Suite; and A Cohan Salute scored for band by Hawley Ades. Composers showcase

Henderson State University students, faculty and guest artists will perform in 10 concerts showcasing the music of 54 guest composers from six states during the Society of Composers Inc.'s Region Six Conference, Friday-Sunday on the university's Arkadelphia campus.

Concerts will take place at 10 a.m. and 2, 4 and 8 p.m. Friday-Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday in the Russell Fine Arts Building; the Henderson State Wind Ensemble will close out the conference with a concert at 3 p.m. Sunday in Arkansas Hall. Call (870) 230-5253 or email schroep@hsu.edu.

Music competition

The Arkansas Symphony Orchestra Guild will hold its annual Stella Boyle Smith Young Artists Competition on Saturday in the Stella Boyle Smith Recital Hall, Fine Arts Building, University of Arkansas at Little Rock, 2801 S. University Ave., Little Rock.

Sixteen piano, brass, wind and string players will take part in closed preliminary competition, 9 a.m.-noon; the finals, open to the public with free admission, begin at 1 p.m.

First-place winner will receive $750, with $500 for second place and $250 for the winner in each category. Competition winners are also eligible to solo with the Arkansas Symphony at a spring 2016 Side-by-Side concert. Call (870) 403-2350.

Art competition

The University of Central Arkansas' annual Student Art Competitive exhibition will be on display today-March 19 in the Baum Gallery of Fine Art, in McCastlain Hall, UCA, 201 Donaghey Ave., Conway.

Brian Lang, chief curator of the Arkansas Arts Center, will select the works for the exhibit from student submissions and the winners of first, second and third prizes and an honorable mention, who will divide a pot of $1,000 in cash prizes. Admission to the opening reception, 4-6 p.m. today, and the exhibit are free.

Art symposium

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock will host the 25th annual Arkansas College Art History Symposium today and Friday in the university's Fine Arts Building, 2801 S. University Ave., Little Rock.

Undergraduate art history majors Hayley Chronister, Melissa Colter, Jeannie Lee and Spencer Zahrn and graduate student Susan Moneyhon will present 20-minute illustrated presentations covering their original research.

Elise Smith, professor of art history at Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss., will be the keynote speaker, giving a lecture titled "Contemporary Museum Architecture: the 'Selfless' or 'Sexy' Controversy," at 7:30 p.m. today in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall, and a closing presentation, "One Meandering Journey: Making Sense of Some Odd Art Historical Choices," at 3:15 p.m. Friday in Fine Arts Room 161.

'Launchapalooza'

The University of Central Arkansas' Toad Suck Review literary journal will conclude the university's department of writing's ArkaText Festival with its fifth annual "Launchapalooza," 7 p.m. Friday at the Faulkner County Library, 1900 W. Tyler St., Conway.

UCA faculty member and poet Stacy Kidd; UCA alumna and staff member Lisa Ference; author Tim Lepczyk, a Hendrix College Fellow in Digital Humanities and Pedagogy and editor of the online literary journal Scintilla Magazine; and Nate Jordon, editor and publisher of Monkey Puzzle Press, who now lives in Harrison, will read from their work. Admission is free; some of the readings may include adult language.

The event unveils the Toad Suck Review #5, aka the "Hot-found" issue, which in addition to work by new authors also includes works by Jack Kerouac, Diane Di Prima, Ed Dorn and Jericho Brown. Seinfeld on stage

Comedian Jerry Seinfeld will perform a show at 7 p.m. May 29 at the Orpheum Theatre in Memphis.

CARE giving

Cantrell Gallery, 8206 Cantrell Road, Little Rock, gives support to furry friends in need of homes with its new, short-term exhibit of works by Sandra Graves (who paints under the name R.S. Perry). The exhibit, Friday-March 14, will benefit Central Arkansas Rescue Effort for Animals and starts with an opening reception, 6-8 p.m. Friday. Admission is free. Disney On Ice

Tickets are now on sale for the Disney On Ice production "Worlds of Fantasy" May 6-10 at Verizon Arena, North Little Rock. The performance will include characters from Cars, The Little Mermaid and Toy Story, as well as Tinker Bell and the Disney Fairies.

Shows are at 7 p.m. May 6-9 with matinees at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. May 9 and 2 p.m. May 10.

Tickets are $16-$61 (plus service charges). There is an opening night discount of $13 on select seats. There are $13 tickets for children ages 2 to 12 in select seating areas for all shows.
