Plane skids off runway at LaGuardia, crashes through fence

NEW YORK — Authorities say a Delta plane from Atlanta has skidded off a runway while landing at LaGuardia Airport and has crashed through a fence.

Port Authority of New York and New Jersey spokesman Joe Pentangelo said the MD-80 went off the runway at about 11:10 a.m. Thursday. The Fire Department of New York said emergency responders are still assessing people, but any injuries appear to be minor.

Images show the plane resting in the snow with the nose of the jet through a chain-link fence.

Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines said the 125 passengers and five crew members are deplaning on aircraft slides and have been bused to a terminal. It said authorities are investigating the cause of the incident on Flight 1086.

Pentangelo said the plane is apparently leaking fuel.
