Overturned 18-wheeler stalls I-30 traffic

An 18-wheeler overturned on Interstate 30 westbound at the 136th mile marker just east of 65th Street on Friday afternoon, officials say.

The vehicle, sitting on its top, is off the road but two lanes of I-30 are blocked, Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department spokesman Danny Straessle said.

The truck was loaded with 73,000 pounds of aluminum dross, which is an aluminum waste material.

Hazmat crews responded to the scene, though the truck “didn’t spill an overabundance of materials,” Little Rock Fire Department spokesman Capt. Jason Weaver said.

“It was more a precautionary evaluation of what it is just in case it was dangerous,” he said.

The material is reactive with water, and is a possible ventilation hazard, Weaver said.

Officials spoke to the owner of the company transporting the material, and said though the material is reactive with water, it isn’t likely to react unless it’s submerged.

Cleaning crews are on their way to the scene, Weaver said.

No other vehicles were involved in the wreck, which is being investigated by Arkansas State Police.

The driver was briefly entrapped, Arkansas State Police spokesman Bill Sadler said, but no injuries were reported.
