Grants awarded to mark Civil War

Nine projects have been awarded grants totaling $14,565 from the Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, the commission announced.

Six of the projects will receive the maximum $2,000 amount. Civil War sesquicentennial grants are awarded four times annually as funds are available.

Recipients of the $2,000 grants awarded were:

• The Bill and Sharon Arnold Family Foundation of DeValls Bluff for a Civil War program.

• The Little Rock School District to transport students for programs at the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History and the Old State House Museum in Little Rock.

• The Ozark Arts Council in Harrison for the play Shenandoah -- The Musical.

• The Delta Cultural Center in Helena-West Helena for the 152nd-anniversary re-enactment of the Battle of Helena.

• Reed's Bridge Battlefield Preservation Society in Jacksonville for its annual event on the Bayou Meto battlefield.

• Clay County for a re-enactment of military activities at Chalk Bluff.

The remaining three grants awarded were:

• Dallas County Museum in Fordyce, $1,400, for the 151st-anniversary re-enactment of the Battle of Marks' Mills.

• The Clayton House in Fort Smith, $885, for "Civil War Days in Fort Smith and the Sutton Mansion: An Earlier Clayton House Chapter."

• Mosaic Templars Cultural Center in Little Rock, $280, to conserve a muster roll, which is an official list of the officers and enlisted men, of the 46th U.S. Colored Infantry Regiment.
