Teachers could receive a raise in their base salaries after the Arkansas House of Representatives approved the measure on Friday.
Rep. Bruce Cozart, R-Hot Springs, sponsored the bill that passed with 84 voting for and no one voting against.
For a first-year teacher with a bachelor's degree, base pay would increase from $29,244 to $30,122. A first-year teacher with a master's would now make $34,640, up from $33,630.
This change would take effect for the 2015-16 school year, with another increase the next school year.
For the 2016-17 year, a first-year teacher with a bachelor's degree would earn $31,000 and $35,650 with a master's degree.
The bill now heads to the Senate for approval.
