One killed, 5 hurt in Phillips County collision

One person was killed and five others, including three minors, were hurt Thursday in a collision near Helena-West Helena in Phillips County, authorities said.

It happened about 3:40 p.m. on U.S. 49 about 3 miles east of Helena as 79-year-old Evelyn Owens attempted to turn a 2002 Ford Taurus from the northbound lanes left onto Phillips County Road 319, according to a preliminary Arkansas State Police report.

Police say the Taurus then struck a southbound 2007 Dodge Magnum driven by 32-year-old Lashekia Wilson.

Iva J. Walker, a 66-year-old passenger in the Taurus, suffered fatal injuries. Both drivers were hurt as were three minors, whose ages weren't included in the report, who were riding in the Magnum.

Conditions at the time were described as clear and dry.

The death was the 92nd in a traffic crash in Arkansas so far this year, according to preliminary figures.
