Arkansas headed to West Virginia

No. 19 Arkansas was selected Monday to compete in the NCAA Morgantown (W.Va.) Regional along with No. 2 Florida, the co-defending national champion. Also at the regional are No. 11 Stanford, No. 14 Illinois, No. 25 New Hampshire and host West Virginia.

The meet will take place at Cary Gymnasium on the West Virginia campus at 3 p.m. on April 4.

The other five regionals are being hosted by Auburn, California, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Iowa State. The top two teams at each of the six regionals will qualify for the NCAA Championships, which will be held in Fort Worth on April 17-19.

“We are excited about the matchups,” Arkansas Coach Mark Cook said. “We’ve traveled to Morgantown for competitions before, so we are familiar with the trip.”

The Razorbacks, led by all-around competitors Amanda Wellick and Paige Zaziski, are coming off a 195.925 showing at the SEC Championships last weekend. Arkansas’ second-best score at SECs put the Razorbacks in sixth place.

BASKETBALL

OBU’s Brown, Harding’s Kavas honored

Ouachita Baptist’s Tirrell Brown and Harding’s Andraz Kavas earned NCAA Division II Central District honors by the National Association of Basketball Coaches on Monday.

Brown earned first-team honors with Nebraska-Kearney’s Connor Beranek, Augustana’s Dan Jansen and Caey Schilling, Minnesota State-Mankato’s Assem Marel and Minnesota State-Moorhead’s Jordan Riewer.

Brown, a junior from Jacksonville, started 23 games, finishing ninth nationally in field-goal percentage at 63.0 and averaged 17.6 points and 7.4 rebounds per game.

Kavas eaned second-team honors with Minnesota-Duluth’s Brett Ervin, Central Missouri’s Brennen Hughes, Minnesota State-Mankato’s Zach Monaghan and Northwest Missouri State’s Justin Pitts.

Kavas, a forward, led the Great American Conference in scoring at 20.1 points per game. He scored at least 10 points in 26 games for the Bisons and had 16 games with at least 20 points.

BASEBALL

UAM splits with OBU

Arkansas-Monticello split a doubleheader with Ouachita Baptist on Monday in Monticello, losing the first game 10-7 in 10 innings and winning the second 4-3.

In the first game, the Tigers (11-9, 7-3 Great American Conference) scored four runs on three hits and two Arkansas-Monticello errors in the 10th inning to win.

In the second game, Bronson Gilliam hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning to tie the game and in the seventh, Travis Steinke won it with a bases-loaded single for the Boll Weevils (11-9, 7-3).

Arkansas Tech’s Fergus honored

Arkansas Tech left fielder Cole Fergus was named player of the week by the Great American Conference.

Fergus hit .500 for the week and .545 in the Wonder Boys’ weekend series with Southeastern Oklahoma State with six RBI. In the second game of the series, he had three hits.

GOLF

UAFS’s Stiles second entering final round

Arkansas-Fort Smith’s Anne Stiles shot a 5-over-par 75 Monday and is in second place, while Arkansas-Fort Smith is in fourth place the team competition at the Lions Classic at Hardscrabble Country Club in Fort Smith.

The Lady Lions shot a 38-over 318 and trails Midwestern State by 13 strokes.

Midwestern State’s Brenna Moore leads with a 4-over 74.

In the men’s comptetion, Arkansas-Fort Smith shot a 19-over 299 and trails first-round leader Cameron by 19 strokes going into today’s final round.

Zach Partin and Drew Miller of UAFS each shot a 4-over 74 and are tied for ninth overall. Jace Gallington shot a 5-over-par 75 and is tied for 14th. Cameron’s Cullen Stahl leads with a 1-under 69.

Reddies eighth in Oklahoma

Henderson State’s men’s team is in eighth place after Monday’s first round of the Broncho Invitational in Oklahoma City.

Henderson State shot a 302 and trails tournament leader Central Oklahoma by 16 strokes. HSU’s Price Murphree shot a 74 and is in 23rd place.

Arkansas Tech wins in Missouri

Arkansas Tech’s women’s team won the Missouri Western State Invitational in St. Joseph, Mo.

The Golden Suns finished with a 619, edging Central Oklahoma by one stroke and Northeastern (Okla.) State by two.

Arkansas Tech’s Rebecka Surtevall won the individual title with a 151 (77-74). Also for Tech, Taylor Kline was second at 152 (75-77) and Megan Keffery was tied for seventh at 156 (76-80).

Henderson State’s women finished 10th with a 674.

Ally Harris led the Lady Reddies with a 16th-place finish, shooting a 161.
