Arkansas 5 accident kills Cabot woman

A Cabot woman has died from injuries suffered in a Sunday morning two-vehicle crash in Lonoke County, Arkansas State Police said.

Shirley Fondren, 72, of Cabot was a passenger in a 2012 Nissan Altima that was traveling north on Arkansas 5 when it was struck head-on by a 2008 Dodge truck traveling south on the highway, state police said. The wreck occurred at 10:25 a.m. Sunday near the intersection of Arkansas 5 and Ballard Road.

According to state police, the Dodge truck ran off the roadway to the right, overcorrected and traveled across the centerline, hitting the Nissan.

State police reported the driver of the Dodge, Charles King, 56, of Beebe and the driver of the Nissan, Joyce Woodson, 70, of Cabot were injured in the collision. Another passenger in the Nissan, Donna Chesanek, 77, of Cabot also was injured.

The injured were transported to CHI St. Vincent North in Sherwood and Baptist Health Medical Center-North Little Rock, state police said.

According to state police, it was raining and road conditions were wet at the time of the collision.

State police also reported Monday that a Mountain Home man died March 11 from injuries suffered in a March 6 wreck in Baxter County.

Arthur Greathouse, 85, of Mountain Home was driving a 2003 Cadillac south on Arkansas 5 when his vehicle ran off the road and hit a tree, according to state police. The wreck occurred at 10:05 a.m. March 6 a half-mile south of Mountain Home.

Greathouse was transported to Cox Medical Center South in Springfield, Mo., where he died March 11, state police said.

Conditions were clear and the road was dry at the time of the accident, state police reported.
