Jefferson County clerk arrested on theft, forgery charges

The Jefferson County clerk was arrested on theft charges Wednesday, according to the Jefferson County jail inmate roster.

Patricia Johnson, 67, of Pine Bluff, has been charged with attempted theft, forgery and trading in public office, according to the jail site.

Johnson was arrested Wednesday by the Jefferson County sheriff's office on a no-bond warrant, sheriff's office spokesman Maj. Lafayette Woods said.

Woods said deputies just executed the warrant from Arkansas State Police and that the sheriff's office is not the investigating agency.

Johnson was booked into the jail at 1:13 p.m. and released at 2:04 p.m., records show.

In February, unauthorized bonuses paid to employees of the Jefferson County clerk's office were the subject of an Arkansas State Police investigation, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette previously reported.

An Arkansas Legislative Audit report released by county officials showed that Johnson issued more than $60,000 in bonuses to employees since 2009 without seeking approval from the Quorum Court.

The Jefferson County clerk's website lists Johnson as the current county clerk.
