Spring Break Activities

NEWPORT — Jacksonport State Park will offer the following programs in celebration of spring-break week in Arkansas: Today, a Build a Bunny Mini Workshop from 9-11 a.m., with a fee of $5 per child, and the We All Need Trees program at 2:30 p.m. at the campground; Friday, Living History Tours of the Jacksonport Courthouse at 10:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.; and on Saturday, the park’s 31st annual Easter Egg Hunt at 11 a.m. Except when noted, the activities are free. Chamber Trap Tournament

BATESVILLE — The Batesville Area Chamber of Commerce will host its fourth annual Chamber Trap Tournament from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at the Independence County Shooting Sports Complex. Registration will be at 9 a.m., with the first pull at 10 a.m. Each team of five will shoot 25 targets per round. At the end of the first round, event officials will tally the scores and divide teams into evenly matched flights. Prizes will be awarded to winning teams in each flight. Amateur shooters are encouraged to participate, and practice will be held Thursday. Sponsorship opportunities are available for corporate teams. Tour, Sweet Treats, Owl Prowl

POCAHONTAS — Davidsonville Historic State Park is offering a variety of activities during the week of spring break. A Town Site Tour will be conducted from 1-2 p.m., followed by Sweet Treats, a Dutch-oven demonstration, from 3-4 p.m. There will be a charge of $1 for samples of the treats. Fundraiser 5K

SEARCY — The 2015 Stride to Prevent Suicide, a 5K and 1-mile fun run, will be held at 9 a.m. in Spring Park. The event is sponsored by the Dr. Robert E. Elliott Foundation. A Cemetery Hike will take place from 1-2:30 p.m., and Crafts for the Kids will be held from 3-4 p.m. There will be a charge of $1 per craft. United Way Annual Day of Caring

BATESVILLE — The United Way of North Central Arkansas will hold the Independence County Annual Day of Caring on Saturday. The event offers businesses, individuals, organizations and civic clubs a chance to help local nonprofit human-service agencies accomplish much-needed projects during one day of organized volunteerism. This year, volunteers will help start the next Habitat for Humanity home construction and paint classrooms at The Community School in Batesville. Arkansas Hospice Volunteer Training

SEARCY — Arkansas Hospice will host a volunteer training session from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Arkansas Hospice office, 410 N. Discussion topics will include the history and philosophy of hospice, concepts of death and dying, the role of the volunteer, spirituality, communication skills and handling bereavement. MOUNTAIN HOME — The Baxter County Adult Education program will now offer evening GED classes. The program’s day and evening GED classes are both free of charge. Summer Reading Camp

BATESVILLE — Registration is open for Reading is a Superpower! This 2015 Summer Reading Camp for 6- to 12-year-olds, a fundraiser for the Ozark Foothills Literacy Project, will be held from 9 a.m. to noon June 15-18 at First United Methodist Church, 615 E. Main St. Activities will include story time, a superhero obstacle course, a readers theater, creative writing, recipe reading to make super snacks, word games and more. The camp will be led by certified teachers, including Literacy Project board members Ann Walmsley and Julie Reardon. Registration fees are $99 until May 15, plus $75 for each additional sibling. Essay Contest for Halberg Ecology Camp Scholarships

CLINTON — The 2015 Essay Contest for Scholarships to the Halberg Ecology Camp in June, presented by the Little Red River Audubon Society, is open to fifth- and sixth-graders who live in one of the following counties: Van Buren, Cleburne, Stone and Searcy. Participants must be 11 or 12 years old when the camp begins on June 14 or a second session on June 21. The 200- to 300-word hand-written essays will start with “There is a Mockingbird …” and will be judged on facts and creativity. Mail entries to the Little Red River Audubon Society, P.O. Searcy Youth Art

SEARCY — A new exhibit, Searcy Youth Art, will be at the Searcy Art Gallery at the historical Black House through Wednesday. The show features the artwork of more than 40 students ranging from kindergartners to eighth-graders from Sidney Deener Elementary School, Westside Elementary, McRae Elementary, Southwest Middle School, Kensett Elementary, Judsonia Elementary and Harding Academy. The display includes pieces in a variety of media, including pastel, crayon, paint, pencil, marker and wax resist, as well as sculptures and mosaics. Gallery hours are 1-4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and noon to 4 pm. Saturday. Admission is free.

Lenten Lunches

HORSESHOE BEND — Faith Presbyterian Church on Church Street will provide soup and sandwiches at noon each Wednesday during Lent. All are welcome, and a new speaker each week will provide a brief message during the meal. The lunch consists of three kinds of homemade soup and various sandwiches. There is no charge, but donations will be accepted.

Boyd Carpenter Scholarship Applications

ASH FLAT — For the 31st year, FNBC Bank will award the Boyd Carpenter Scholarship to a graduating high school senior from Sharp, Izard or Fulton County who plans to seek a four-year degree. FNBC Bank partners with the Arkansas Community Foundation to fund this $4,000 scholarship — $1,000 per year for four years. To apply, visit www.arcf.org/scholarships to complete the online application, due Wednesday. To qualify, students must maintain a grade-point average of at least 2.5. The scholarship was founded in 1984 to honor Boyd Carpenter, who was then chairman and president of the bank and a devoted advocate for education.
