Arkansas’ Plasencia leads in Georgia

Arkansas junior Regina Plasencia shot a 1-under-par 71 in first-round action Friday to lead the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in Athens, Ga.

Plasencia is the stroke play winner of the tournament and she helped lead the Razorbacks to a third-place finish in stroke play. Friday’s format for the tournament featured 18 holes of stroke play. The match play competition begins today and continues through Sunday.

Arkansas posted a 21-over 309. UCLA is first with a 301 followed by South Carolina at 308.

Also for the Razorbacks, junior Gabriela Lopez finished tied for 15th overall with a 5-over 77. Sophomore Samantha Marks was tied for 24th overall with a 79, followed by freshman Jordy LaBarbera, who tied for 40th with an 82. Sophomore Summar Roachell shot an 84 to tie for 48th overall.

TENNIS

UA women lose

The Arkansas women lost to Georgia 7-0 on Friday at the Billingsley Tennis Center in Fayetteville.

Arkansas fell to 13-10 overall and 2-6 in the SEC. Georgia improved to 14-14 overall and 7-1 in the SEC.

Lauren Herring, Ellen Perez, Kennedy Shaffer, Silvia Garcia, Hannah King and Carolina Brinson won singles matches for Georgia on Friday.

Razorbacks hire assistant

Arkansas women’s Coach Colby Hale announced the addition of Kristi Kiely to his coaching staff in a release Friday.

Kiely joins the Razorbacks after five years as Westmont (Calif.) College’s head coach. She finished 65-26-10 at Westmont and took its program to the NAIA National Tournament the past four years.
