Sherwood Farmers Market takes leave

The Sherwood Farmers Market, originally scheduled to begin this month, won't be held this year because of planned construction of a new pavilion at Sherwood Forest that will house the farmers market starting next year, according to a city Parks and Recreation Department news release.

The Sherwood Farmers Market has been held on rented property at the corner of North Hills Boulevard and Club Road beginning in May. Last year, the open-air market experienced a drop in participation and some cancellations because of several instances of inclement weather, according to the release.

The Sherwood Advertising and Promotion Commission included up to $200,000 in its $1.5 million annual budget for the pavilion to create a permanent home for the farmers market with a 6,000-square-foot site plan. The farmers market will be managed by the Parks and Recreation Department when it reopens next year.

The pavilion also will be used for citywide events that are held at Sherwood Forest, 1111 W. Maryland Ave., during the year and for parks programming and private rentals, according to the release.

The Sherwood Farmers Market previously was managed by Keep Sherwood Beautiful, a volunteer organization, with funding from the Sherwood Chamber of Commerce.
