Battle, cannon fire to mark Civil War

A battle re-enactment is among the events, exhibits and programs in May observing the 150th anniversary period of the Civil War, the Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission announced.

More information on the activities and a complete list of commission-sanctioned events throughout the state are available on the commission's website, arkansascivilwar150.com. The observance period concludes at the end of this year.

Observance of the 151st anniversary of the Battle of Marks' Mill, fought April 25, 1864, will feature battle and camp re-enactments and period dances May 15-17 in Fordyce.

Long Road to the Sultana, a program by Nancy Hendricks on the worst maritime disaster in Arkansas history, will be May 11 at the Bob Herzfeld Memorial Library in Benton.

Boats and Bayonets on the Black River, to include a cannon-firing demonstration and interpretation of the Civil War in northeast Arkansas, will be at Davidsonville Historic State Park near Pocahontas on May 16.

Civil War Days in Fort Smith and the Sutton Mansion on May 23 at the Clayton House in Fort Smith will feature four presentations on Fort Smith during the Civil War.
