3 in Faulkner County charged with fleeing, firing at deputies

Three people were arrested in Faulkner County early Monday morning after stealing a vehicle then fleeing and shooting at deputies, authorities say.

About midnight, deputies stopped a Hyundai Sonata at the Cracker Box Valero gas station at 547 Arkansas 365 in Mayflower, the Faulkner County sheriff's office said in a news release.

The car had been reported stolen in Washington County, and Kayla Thompson, 31, was arrested and charged with stealing the vehicle, deputies said.

Deputies later pulled over a Ford Mustang being driven by Harvey Martin III, 46, and Christopher Cummings, 29, who officials believed were involved in the Sonata's theft, authorities said.

Martin and Cummings fled, leading deputies on a chase down Interstate 40 to Conway at speeds up to 100 miles per hour, sheriff's officials said. Cummings shot at deputies' patrol cars before Martin left I-40 at exit 127 in Conway, according to the Faulkner County sheriff's office.

Martin got back onto I-40 and drove to exit 125 using the wrong side of the interstate, deputies said.

Officers chased Martin and Cummings south on Harkrider Street, through downtown on Oak Street and apprehended them after a short foot chase behind apartments on Hairston Avenue, according to the sheriff's office.

Cummings is a parolee, and both he and Martin are "multi-time convicted felons," deputies said.

Martin and Cummings were treated at Conway Regional Medical Center for minor injuries before they were taken to the Faulkner County jail.

Thompson, Martin and Cummings are being held pending charges from the Faulkner County prosecutor's office, authorities said.
