Letter carrier food drive set for Saturday

Letter carriers will pick up more than mail Saturday during the annual National Letter Carrier Food Drive.

Participants are asked to leave nonperishable food donations such as canned soup and vegetables, pasta, rice and cereal, in sturdy bags at their mailboxes, and the letter carriers will take care of the rest, the Arkansas Foodbank said Monday.

Pulaski County donations will be delivered to the Arkansas Foodbank and distributed to those in need in central Arkansas. Other post office branches will collect food items and donate to local pantries in their communities.

Gov. Asa Hutchinson is hosting a news conference at 10 a.m. Thursday at Little Rock’s Main Post Office at 600 E. Capitol Ave. to encourage participation. Arkansans donated 110,000 pounds of food during 2014’s food drive, the Arkansas Foodbank said.
