2 charged in Benton assault

Benton officers arrested a man and a woman Tuesday night on battery and firearms charges after they assaulted someone with whom she had argued, police said.

Witnesses said Ashton Sparks, 23, of Benton was arguing with someone about 10:15 p.m. at the Chapel Ridge Apartments at 6101 Alcoa Road, Benton Police Department spokesman Lt. Kevin Russell said in a news release.

When the argument escalated into a physical fight, witnesses said, Sparks used a device similar to a Taser to shock the victim, according to police.

Officers saw Adonnis Ward, 30, of Little Rock walking away from the fight when they arrived, Russell said. Ward ran from police and threw a pistol on the ground during the chase, Russell added.

Officers apprehended Ward while he was trying to climb a fence and police said he resisted arrest before they took him into custody. Ward also provided police with false information about his identity, Russell said.

Sparks was charged with second-degree battery and is being held at the Saline County jail with bail not yet set.

Ward was charged with fleeing, obstruction of a governmental operation, felon in possession of a firearm and resisting arrest. He is being held at the Saline County jail in lieu of $5,000 bond.
