JONESBORO — A group of people, including two ministers, are lobbying the Jonesboro City Council to consider an anti-discrimination ordinance extending protections for gay city employees.
Several residents asked aldermen during a public commentary period at the Tuesday meeting to weigh changing the city's current employment policy. The Jonesboro Sun reported the 12 council members didn't respond to residents' comments during the meeting.
Dr. Joseph Rukus is a faculty adviser for the Gay-Straight Alliance at Arkansas State University. He said the school, like the city, doesn't specifically guarantee that there will be no job discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.
He said he feels uncomfortable with it not being in writing and that he just wants the City Council to discuss the resolution.
