Steve Miller Band to play Saturday concert in Rogers

The Steve Miller Band will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Walmart AMP, Pinnacle Hills, 5079 W. Northgate Road, Rogers. Miller is known for pop rock hits such as "The Joker," "Fly Like an Eagle" and "Jet Airliner."

'Fate and Phoenix'

The Fort Smith Symphony will close its 2014-15 season with a concert titled "Fate and the Phoenix," 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the ArcBest Corp. Performing Arts Center, 55 S. Seventh St., Fort Smith.

Bulgarian violinist Bojidara Kouzmanova will solo in the "Meditation" from Thais by Jules Massenet and Zigeunerweisen (Gypsy Airs), op.20, by Pablo de Sarasate. The program will also include the 1919 version of Igor Stravinsky's Firebird Suite and Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 in c minor, op.67. John Jeter conducts. Canadian Cirque

French-Canadian circus company Cirque Alfonse will bring its Timber! acrobatic show to Northwest Arkansas, 7 p.m. Thursday and 8 p.m. Friday in Baum Walker Hall, Walton Arts Center, 495 W. Organ recital

Organist Beau Baldwin will give a recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 224 N. East Ave., Fayetteville. The program includes the Toccata in d minor ("Dorian") by J.S. Bach, Elegy by G.T. Thalban-Ball, Noel Etranger by L.C. Daquin and Miriam's Dance by Joel Martinson. Sponsor is Friends of Music at St. Paul's. Admission is free. Poppins auditions

The River Valley Arts Center will hold auditions for the musical Mary Poppins (original music and lyrics by Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman, new songs and additional music and lyrics by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe, book by Julian Fellowes; co-created by Cameron Mackintosh) at 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday in the band room (Room 101), Witherspoon Hall, Arkansas Tech University, 407 W. Q St., Russellville.

No preparation or experience is necessary. The auditions will involve going over a song from the show and portions of the script; auditioners will then break into groups and audition in those groups. All ages and families are welcome. Director is Ardith Morris; music director is Kenneth Futterer. Production dates are June 25-29.

Dance concert et al.

Fort Smith-based Western Arkansas Ballet's Dance Academy will offer a "window-view" of its classes in its 29th annual Spring Dance Concert, 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Van Buren Fine Arts Center, 2001 Pointer Trail, Van Buren. Also, the ballet's pre-professional company will hold open auditions for positions for the 2015-16 season May 28 at the Western Arkansas Ballet studio, located at 4701 Grand Ave., Fort Smith. Audition class for ages 11-13 will be 4-5:30 p.m.; for ages 14 and up, 6-8 p.m. There is a $25 audition fee. Registration starts 30 minutes before each class.

Candidates should be at least 11 years old and have at least three years of ballet experience. Dress code for girls and women is black leotard, pink tights, ballet shoes, pointe shoes (for those with at least one year of pointe class) and hair pulled away from face "in a nice bun." Men and boys should wear black tights or shorts, white T-shirt and ballet shoes. No jewelry or gum chewing; an appropriate appearance is required to audition.

The season includes the company's 30th annual production of The Nutcracker; Earquake! with the Fort Smith Symphony; a spring ballet; a spring dance concert; Dance Fusion; and the Regional Dance America Festival in Baton Rouge.

And the company is offering several June dance programs at its Grand Avenue studios in Fort Smith (deadline to sign up is one week prior to each class):

• Lorraine Cranford Summer Dance Workshop, June 7-12. Cost: $475. Intensive workshop for students 11 and up with at least two years of classical ballet training, culminating in a June 12 in-studio performance.

• Dance Camps, featuring ballet or jazz geared to students' skill levels, including a dance class and explorations of music, dance history, nutrition, creative expression, mime and dance vocabulary, culminating in an in-studio performance.

• Ballet: ages 4-6, 10 a.m.-noon June 15-19, $65; ages 7-9, 1-3 p.m. June 15-19, $70; ages 10-12, 9:30 a.m.-noon June 22-26, $75.

• Jazz, June 22-24: ages 8-12, 11-11:45 a.m., $50; ages 13 and up, noon-1 p.m., $55.

Student winners

Darcy Olmstead, Caroline Wetsell, Maggie Bell and Joshua Carpenter, a team of Fayetteville High School students, have won the grand prize in the first Arkansas Historic Film Prize competition of short documentaries focusing on historic properties throughout the state.

The Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, which created the competition, will screen their film on the Headquarters House, along with other prize winners, at 6 p.m. May 22, at the Ron Robinson Theater, 100 River Market Ave., Little Rock. Admission is free.

The other winners:

• First prize: Austin Chitmon and Chanse Harp of Bentonville High School for Battle of Prairie Grove

• Second prize: Jordan Thompson of the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts for Our Forgotten Lady (Hot Springs' Majestic Hotel)

• Third prize (tie): Kelton McCarthy, Zaid Martinez and Andrew Trice of Fayetteville High School for History of FHS; Gracia Robison of Dardanelle High School for Mount Nebo State Park

• Fourth prize: Tanis Taft of Conway High School for Simon Brothers Dairy Farm.
