FAYETTEVILLE -- For the third time within the past 11 months, the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville has signed a cooperative agreement with an Iraqi university.
In a formal agreement announced Thursday, UA and the University of Sulaimani will "work to create programs for exchanging academic, research and other educational materials," the announcement from UA states. The agreement also calls for the development of opportunities for the Iraqi university to send students to UA.
In the current spring semester, UA has 34 students enrolled from Iraq, including 30 graduate students receiving Iraqi government scholarships. Another 14 Iraqi students are studying English at the Spring International Center and are expected to enroll at UA once they gain proficiency in English.
UA previously signed similar agreements with Iraqi schools the University of Kerbala and the University of Kafa.
Douglas Rhoads, director of UA's graduate program in cell and molecular biology, as well as former Iraqi student Adnan Al-Rubaye, associate director of the program, have worked to increase opportunities at UA for the "sponsored students" from Iraq.
