Mary Lou Gates

Where I live: I live in Fayetteville on the west side of town. I live with my family of five, and my father lives with us. My mother passed away almost nine years ago from breast cancer, and I didn't want him to be alone. We live off of Mount Comfort Road. It's quieter on this side of town. It's kind of laid back. We've lived here for almost six years.

Occupation: I am program director for the Walker Family Residential Community out on Huntsville Road. I have eight transitional housing units and eight permanent-support housing units that I take care of. We also have three family units. The rest are dorm-style efficiency apartments. I have been with 7 Hills Homeless Center for about five years.

My favorite space: My living room.

Why? It's kind of our space. I read to my 7-year-old in the living room. We don't spend a lot of time watching TV, but we do have certain TV shows that we watch as a family. I like to just be able to relax and be with my family.

If I could do one thing to improve the space, I would: Add more seating and more comfortable pillows.
